What verbal reasoning tests
VR tests logical thinking with words — not vocabulary or grammar like the English paper, but pattern recognition using language. Letter sequences, word codes, analogies, compound words, hidden words. Each question type has its own logic, and once your child understands that logic, they can answer those questions reliably.
The 21 question types problem
GL Assessment verbal reasoning covers up to 21 distinct question types. Most children who sit the exam have practised maybe eight or ten of them. When they encounter an unfamiliar type in the exam, they panic and waste time. Systematic coverage of all question types is the most important thing in VR preparation.
How to actually get better at VR
