Sound familiar?

You didn't sign up to be the tutor.

But here you are — picking topics, marking answers, deciding what to do tonight. The work the tutor or platform should be doing, you're doing. Most evenings, badly, because you're tired.

Sunday night, again

"It's 9pm. I've got CGP books on the table and no idea which one she should do this week. She's already in bed."

— Sarah, mum to Mira (Year 5, Surrey)

£200 a month for one hour

"The tutor's good. But it's one hour a week. The other six days, we're just guessing."

— James, dad to Oliver (Year 4, North London)

Stuck on a fractions question

"He asks me how to do it. I learned it differently. We end up both frustrated."

— Priya, mum to Ayaan (Year 5, Birmingham)

Tests bought, never marked

"I bought the practice papers in September. It's January. Three are done. None are marked."

— Tom, dad to Jaspreet (Year 5, Manchester)

Lumi — Virtual Tutor
Lumi Here to help

"This is exactly what I'm here for.
Let me take this off your plate."

How it works

Three steps. Then it just runs in the background.

  1. 01 Step 1

    Your child practises every day

They log in to a friendly dashboard, work through their daily plan — a quick test, revision cards, a topic study. 20 minutes. They know what to do.

    Practice
  2. 02 Step 2

    Lumi watches and learns

Behind the scenes, the AI tracks every answer. Where they're confident. Where they're guessing. Which topics are wobbly. Tomorrow's plan adapts to what it saw today.

    AI watches
  3. 03 Step 3

Help is always one tap away

Stuck mid-question? Lumi's intelligent tutor explains it in plain language — worked through, not just an answer. Your parent dashboard shows it all: progress, weak spots, what to do next.

    Help + visibility

The plan adapts every day. You stay informed without lifting a finger.

A typical week

What changes when Lumi takes over the planning.

Not a sales pitch — a week. Three moments. The kind a parent currently spends planning, marking, or worrying about.

  1. 01

    Tuesday, 4:30pm

    Maya logs in after school.

Her plan's already there: a 10-minute Quick Test on fractions, 12 vocabulary cards due, a short topic study on shape rotation. She does it. Closes the laptop. 22 minutes. No arguments about what to do next.

  2. 02

    Thursday, in the morning

You check the dashboard over coffee.

Three topics shifted from Intermediate to Strong this week. One — Reading Inference — dipped. You tap 'prioritise' so tomorrow's plan opens with it. Twenty seconds. Done.

  3. 03

    Sunday, 9am

Your weekly summary arrives by email.

One paragraph. Maya's biggest wins. One thing worth a closer look. The plan for the coming week — already built. You read it on your phone. The CGP books stay in the cupboard.

The Daily AI Plan

The thing you'd hire someone to do.

Every morning at 6am, Lumi builds tomorrow's plan from what your child practised today. 3 to 5 tasks, each with a reason. Decided before they sit down.

  • Refreshed every 24 hours from real test data
  • Each task explains why it's there ('missed 4 questions on this last week')
  • Skip, prioritise, or add a note as the parent — you stay in control
  • Sized for 20–30 minutes a day. Sustainable, not overwhelming.

For you

See progress, in numbers you can trust.

Every test your child takes is measured against their own average. You see exactly how much they've improved — week by week, topic by topic. Not just a streak. Not just a score. Real, visible growth.

app.lumi.co.uk/parent
A Lumi test result showing one correct answer and one wrong answer with an explanation, followed by a Mathematics improvement bar. The previous average is 46.7%, this test scored 80%, an improvement of +33.3%. The text below reads 'Great improvement! Up 33.3% from your average.'

Per-child summary

Streak, stars, subject progress, recent activity — all at a glance.

Subject mastery

Topic-by-topic view: weak, intermediate, strong, mastered. No more guessing.

Test history

Every test your child has taken, with score, time spent, and date.

AI plan controls

Skip a task. Prioritise another. Add a note. You stay in the driver's seat.

The thing no other app shows you

Not just what they scored. How they behaved.

Most apps tell you the score. Lumi tells you whether your child rushed, second-guessed themselves, or trusted their gut. Three patterns that quietly decide whether they pass the real exam.

Watch the clock

Pace

How often they rush.

Lumi flags any test finished in under 30% of the planned time. If your child consistently rushes, that's the conversation to have — before exam day.

Trusts first pick

Second-guessing

What happens when they change.

We track whether second-guessing makes them right or wrong. Most kids change their answer to a worse one. If yours doesn't — that's a quiet superpower.

440 questions

Difficulty mix

Accuracy across easy / medium / hard.

Strong on easy, wobbly on hard? You'll see it the moment it happens — and tomorrow's plan adjusts to push them up the difficulty curve.

app.lumi.co.uk/parent/progress
Sam's Progress Report in the Lumi parent dashboard. Shows GL exam countdown of 224 days, 1 day streak, 52 total stars, 3 tests per week, and 5 minutes of study time. Below: a Test Behaviour panel breaking down three metrics — Difficulty mix (440 questions, accuracy by easy/medium/hard), Pace (6 of 20 recent tests rushed, 30%, with the most recent test rushed), and Second-guessing (0% of 440 answered changed, suggesting they trust their first pick).

Most apps tell you what your child knows. Lumi tells you whether they'll get it right under pressure.

A Lumi revision card showing the answer side: the question asked the correct plural of MAN, and the answer panel reveals 'Men' on a vivid green background, with the multiple-choice options below showing the correct option highlighted. Below the card are 'Didn't know' and 'Got it!' buttons for the spaced-repetition algorithm to schedule the next review.
Spaced repetition

Words she met in September. Still there in February.

Lumi's revision cards use the same proven algorithm as Anki — the one medical students rely on. Each card returns at the right interval to lodge vocabulary, terminology and formulas in long-term memory. Not crammed for one test, then forgotten.

  • Three card types: revision, vocabulary, formula
  • Due cards each day — your child knows exactly what's on the menu
  • Focus areas flag weak topics for extra revision
  • Bookmark tricky cards mid-session, revisit at the end

Same proven algorithm (SM-2) used by Anki and other memory apps trusted by medical students.

When they get stuck

Lumi explains it. Like a tutor would.

Wrong answer? Lumi doesn't just say 'wrong' — it walks your child through it. Step by step, in plain language, with the actual numbers from their question. The kind of patient explanation a tutor gives, available the moment your child needs it.

  • Built right into every test review — one tap, instant help
  • Explains the working, not just the answer
  • Your child can ask follow-up questions — Lumi keeps answering
  • Kid-safe by design: no off-topic conversation

Lumi's intelligent tutor in action. The question asked how many times greater the digit 6 is than the digit 2 in 36,120. The child picked 600 (wrong); the correct answer is 300. Below, a yellow 'Let's look at this' explanation walks through the place values. Below that, Lumi the virtual tutor offers: 'Let's go through this together' with a chat box where the child can ask anything about the question.
Practice tests

Three ways in. One steady habit.

Short bursts for the daily plan. Focused tests for a wobbly topic. Full mocks for exam stamina. All timed. All explained. All fed straight back into tomorrow's plan.

10 min

Quick Test

Short bursts across mixed topics. The default daily habit.

15–20 min

Topic Test

Focus a session on one topic — Fractions, Synonyms, Shape Rotation.

45–60 min

Mock Assessment

Full-length, exam-conditions practice. Builds real exam stamina.

Real depth

Practise daily for a year. Rarely see the same question twice.

Question banks aren't created equal. Lumi's keeps growing — alongside structured topics, worked examples, and a revision deck that loops back at the right intervals. There's always something new to practise. And something worth revisiting.

Why parents switch to Lumi

What changes when you stop guessing.

We won't pretend other options don't work — they do, eventually. Here's what a typical week looks like with and without Lumi running in the background.

Right now

Without Lumi

  • Sunday night planning

You decide what they do this week. Marked answers? Maybe later.

  • £200+ a month for one tutor hour

Great hour. Then six days of guessing on your own.

  • Workbooks pile up

Bought in September. Half-done by January. No idea what's been mastered.

  • Spaced what?

Words learned in September forgotten by February. Tested cold. Disaster.

£200+ /month for a tutor. Hours of parent admin per week.

From day one

With Lumi

  • Plan ready by 6am

Daily AI plan refreshed overnight. 5 tasks, ~20 minutes. Done.

  • £10 a month — every day

Daily practice, all 4 subjects, every child in the family.

  • Topic-level mastery view

Every topic tagged: weak / intermediate / strong / mastered. Always current.

  • Spaced repetition built-in

Anki's SM-2 algorithm. Cards return at the right interval. Stuff actually sticks.

£10 /month. ~20 min /day. Less than £2 a week.

Same outcome you'd hire a tutor for. A fraction of the cost. None of the admin.

Honest about what Lumi isn't

Because over-promising is how trust dies.

Lumi is a serious, structured self-study platform — but it isn't everything. Before you sign up, here's what you should know it doesn't do:

  • It's not a live tutor. There's no human on a video call. If your child needs 1:1 explanation, Lumi works alongside a tutor, not instead of one.
  • There are no video tutorials. Content is written, with worked examples — not someone talking on screen.
  • It's not for SATs specifically. Focused on 11+, though much of the content overlaps with KS2.
  • No printable worksheets. Everything is on-screen, on any device.
  • There's no guarantee. No platform can promise an 11+ pass — but with proper, daily practice, Lumi gives your child the best chance of one.

An 11+ tutor typically costs £30+ per hour. Lumi runs every day, all four subjects, for less than the price of a single tutoring session each month.

Parents on Lumi

Real families. Specific schools. Honest words.

We dropped from a tutor + three workbooks + a panic to one app and twenty minutes a day. Her mock score has gone up nine points since November.

Sarah M.

Mum to Maya, Year 5 · targeting Tiffin Girls

The spaced repetition is the bit nobody else does properly. Words he met in September come back in February — and he actually remembers them now. Honestly transformative for English.

James K.

Dad to Oliver, Year 4 · QE Boys / Henrietta Barnett

I cancelled the tutor in October. The parent dashboard tells me more in 30 seconds than her weekly email used to. Saved us about £180 a month.

Priya R.

Mum to Anya, Year 6 · sat GL in January

Common questions

Answers for thoughtful parents.

Can't find what you're looking for? Get in touch — we reply within a working day.

  • What ages is Lumi for?

Children aged 7–16, but most useful for Years 4–6 (ages 8–11) preparing for the 11+. The platform also works as general KS2 enrichment for younger children.

  • Which exam boards does Lumi cover?

Content aligns with GL Assessment, CEM, ISEB Common Entrance, and general 11+ topics. You can target one board, or practise across all of them.

  • Does my child still need a tutor?

Most families don't need both. Lumi covers daily practice, revision, assessment and weak-area targeting — the bulk of what a good 11+ tutor delivers. If your child needs 1:1 explanation, a tutor alongside Lumi is a strong combination.

  • How long should my child use Lumi each day?

20–30 minutes is plenty. The daily AI plan is sized for that. Consistency matters more than long sessions.

  • What devices does Lumi work on?

Any modern web browser — laptop, tablet, phone. No app to install. Progress syncs across devices automatically.

  • Is my child's data private?

Yes. No ads. No data sale. UK-hosted. Parent-controlled accounts. We never share data with third parties for marketing.

  • Can I see what my child is doing?

Yes — the parent dashboard shows everything: tasks completed, time spent, scores, subject mastery, the full AI plan history.

  • What if my child finds it too hard or too easy?

The system adapts to their level — practice gets harder as they improve, and the AI plan focuses on weak topics. You can also skip or prioritise topics from the parent dashboard.

  • Can I cancel?

Anytime. No notice period. No retention games. The annual plan can be refunded pro-rata in the first 30 days.

  • What if my child finishes all the content?

The question bank and revision deck keep growing. Spaced repetition means cards loop back at the right intervals even after 'mastered' — so retention stays strong all the way to the exam.
