11+ Buckinghamshire — What Parents Need to Know
Buckinghamshire is one of the last fully selective counties in England. Almost every child sits the 11+. Here's how it works and what preparation actually looks like.
How the Buckinghamshire 11+ works
Buckinghamshire uses the Secondary Transfer Test — a GL Assessment paper covering Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Unlike most other counties, Bucks does not include Maths and English in its transfer test, focusing instead on reasoning ability. The test is sat in September of Year 6. Almost all children in Buckinghamshire state primary schools are registered automatically.
Why the Bucks format is different
The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test was designed to minimise the advantage of coaching by focusing on reasoning rather than curriculum subjects. In practice, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning are highly coachable — children who have practised extensively still outperform those who haven't, regardless of natural ability.
How competitive is the Bucks 11+?
Because almost all children sit the test, competition is intense. Grammar schools in High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Amersham and other Bucks towns are all highly sought after. A child who qualifies but doesn't score highly enough may still not get their first choice school due to distance criteria.
Preparing for the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test
Focus specifically on Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning — these are the only subjects tested. All 21 GL Assessment VR question types need to be practised. NVR needs systematic exposure to all question formats. Because Maths and English aren't tested, preparation time can be concentrated entirely on reasoning — which makes targeted daily practice particularly effective.
