11+ Practice Tests — How Many and How to Use Them
More tests is not always better. The families who use practice papers most effectively aren't the ones doing the most of them — they're the ones doing the most with them.
How many practice tests does your child need?
Two to three per week is a reasonable amount for a child in active preparation. More than that risks burnout and reduces the quality of review — which is the most important part. One well-reviewed practice test where your child understands every wrong answer is worth more than five tests done and filed away.
When to start timed papers
Don't introduce full timed papers too early. In Year 5, focus on building familiarity with question types through untimed practice. Start introducing timed elements from around January of Year 6 — or six months before the exam. By three months out, your child should be sitting at least one full timed paper per week under real conditions.
The mistake most families make with practice papers
Doing the paper and then putting it away. The review is where the learning happens. Every wrong answer needs to be looked at — not to feel bad about it, but to understand exactly what went wrong and why. A child who reviews their errors improves. A child who just does paper after paper without review plateaus.
How to replicate real exam conditions at home
Same time of day as the real exam if possible. No interruptions. No music. A clock they can see. Strict timing — start and stop exactly on time. And no helping during the paper. After the test, go through every wrong answer together. The debrief is as important as the test itself.
