11+ Preparation Guide

11+ Resources for Year 5 — What's Worth Using

There are hundreds of 11+ books, apps and courses. Most families buy too many and use them inconsistently. Here's what actually works — and what you can skip.

What Year 5 preparation should feel like

Not like cramming. Not like a second school day. Twenty to thirty minutes of focused daily practice covering all four subjects. Consistent habits matter far more than intensity at this stage. The goal in Year 5 is to build familiarity with question types and identify weak areas early — not to peak before the exam is even on the horizon.

The problem with workbooks

CGP, Bond, Schofield and Sims — all useful, all with the same fundamental limitation. They don't adapt to your child. A child who struggles with cube nets gets the same number of cube net questions as one who finds them easy. You end up with a child who has worked through a lot of pages but still has the same weak areas as when they started, just harder to identify.

What to use workbooks for

Timed paper practice. Workbooks are good for this — structured papers your child can sit under real conditions. Use them for that and supplement with an adaptive app for daily targeted practice. Don't try to work through workbooks cover to cover in order. That's not how retention works.

What to do in the summer before Year 6

Don't take a complete break. A week off is fine. Six weeks off will undo months of spaced repetition work — vocabulary fades, question type familiarity fades. Keep up 15-20 minutes a day through most of the summer. Use the extra time to start introducing full timed papers, so your child arrives in Year 6 already familiar with the format.

How StageX Academy works alongside other resources

StageX Academy handles the daily targeted practice that workbooks can't — adapting to your child's specific gaps rather than following a fixed order. Use StageX Academy for the 20 minutes a day and workbooks for timed paper sessions. Between the two, you have everything needed for Year 5 preparation without buying a shelf of resources you'll never use systematically.

Frequently asked questions

How many 11+ workbooks does my child need?

Fewer than you think. One good series per subject is enough. What matters is consistent daily practice, not the number of books on the shelf. Most families buy too many and use none of them systematically.

Should I use an app or workbooks?

Both have value in different ways. An adaptive app handles daily targeted practice and tracks progress automatically. Workbooks are useful for paper-based timed practice. Use an app for the daily work and workbooks for mock test sessions.

Is a tutor necessary in Year 5?

Not necessarily. Many children prepare successfully at home in Year 5 with a good app and consistent daily habits. A tutor can be helpful if your child has specific gaps or needs accountability — but daily practice without a tutor often covers more ground than weekly tutoring without daily practice.
