How the Kent 11+ works
Kent uses GL Assessment papers across four subjects — Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The Kent Test is sat in September of Year 6 and is managed by the Kent Grammar Schools. Results are sent out in October, in time for secondary school applications. Kent is one of the few remaining fully selective counties — around 30 grammar schools serve children across the county.
How competitive is the Kent 11+?
Very. Approximately 17,000 children sit the Kent Test each year for around 4,500 grammar school places — a pass rate of roughly 25-30%. Competition is particularly fierce in areas like Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, and Maidstone where grammar schools are heavily oversubscribed even for qualifying children. Distance from the school matters significantly once the academic threshold is met.
What the Kent Test actually assesses
The Kent Test covers Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in a single sitting lasting around two and a half hours. Children are scored and ranked. Grammar schools then offer places to qualifying children based on standardised score and, for oversubscribed schools, proximity.
How to prepare for the Kent 11+
All four subjects, consistently, from Year 5. GL Assessment format throughout — make sure every timed paper your child sits matches the GL structure. The September exam date means the summer before Year 6 is critical preparation time. Vocabulary and verbal reasoning deserve particular attention — many children drop significant marks here despite being strong in Maths.
