11+ Preparation Guide

GL Assessment — What Your Child Will Actually Face

GL is the most widely used 11+ exam board in the UK. But most parents don't know how it works until they're already in preparation mode. Here's what you need to know.

What GL Assessment papers look like

GL papers are split into four separate timed tests — Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Each one is sat at a different point in the exam session. There's no mixed paper — your child moves through each subject distinctly, which makes preparation more straightforward than CEM.

How the scoring works

GL uses age-standardised scores. Your child's raw mark gets converted into a score that accounts for their age in years and months. A child born in August gets a small adjustment compared to one born in September — so age within the school year is factored in. Most grammar schools set their qualifying threshold at around 111-121 standardised.

What GL actually tests in each subject

Maths covers number, fractions, shape, data and problem solving — mostly Year 5-6 curriculum but applied in trickier ways. English is comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. Verbal Reasoning tests 21 different question types involving words, codes and patterns. Non-Verbal Reasoning tests shapes, sequences and spatial puzzles.

The biggest mistake parents make preparing for GL

Spending most of the time on Maths and English because those feel familiar, and leaving Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning until late. VR and NVR are learnable — but only with enough practice time. Many children drop significant marks in VR and NVR not because they're less able, but because they haven't seen enough of the question types.

How StageX Academy prepares children for GL Assessment

Every question StageX Academy gives your child is aligned to GL Assessment format. The daily plan covers all four GL subjects — Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning — weighted according to where your child currently needs the most work. Timed practice papers replicate the GL structure. The parent dashboard shows score estimates alongside progress so you always know where your child stands.

Frequently asked questions

Which schools use GL Assessment?

Most grammar schools in Kent, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Birmingham and many other counties use GL papers. Always check your specific school's admissions page to confirm.

How is GL Assessment different from CEM?

GL papers have a clear, predictable structure — four separate subject tests. CEM mixes subjects into a single sitting and varies year to year, making it harder to prepare for specific question types.

Does StageX Academy cover all four GL subjects?

Yes — Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning are all covered in every subscription, aligned to GL Assessment format and question types.
