What 11+ English actually tests
Comprehension is the biggest component — but not the kind of comprehension your child does in class. 11+ comprehension tests inference and deduction. Not 'what does the text say' but 'what does the author imply'. Children who haven't practised this specific type of analysis often underperform even when they're strong readers.
The vocabulary gap
Vocabulary questions appear throughout the English paper — synonyms, antonyms, word meanings in context. Children with a wide vocabulary have a natural advantage. But vocabulary can be built deliberately, not just through reading. Grammar and punctuation — the bit parents forget
